First Date Ideas, Rated by Cost, Noise and Time

Twenty-six ideas scored on what actually decides a first date: what it costs for two, whether you can hear each other, how long it takes and how easy it is to leave.

It usually happens on a Tuesday: a week of good messages, and suddenly one of you has to name a place. Pick badly and you spend three hours raising your voice over a playlist, across the table from someone you could have read in twenty minutes. The good first date ideas have four things in common: they cost little for two, they’re quiet enough to talk, they fit in about an hour, and they’re easy to end - or to extend.

We rated 26 first date ideas for adults on exactly those four things, plus alcohol and weather. Below are the short answer, the full ratings table, how we scored it, the best picks for seven common situations and a checklist that fits on one card.

The short answer: coffee and a walk still wins

For most adults meeting someone new, the best first date is coffee followed by a short walk. It costs under $20 for two, you can hear each other, and either of you can end it gracefully after 45 minutes or stretch it into lunch.

The math is simple. A regular hot coffee had a median price of $3.77 at US restaurants using Toast in August 2026, according to Toast’s Menu Price Monitor, so two come to about $7.54 before tax and tip. Even at the $5.66 median for a cold brew, the pair stays near $11.

Coffee has a reputation as the unambitious choice. Add the walk and it stops being one. Walking side by side hands you something to talk about besides yourselves, and it takes the job-interview feel out of sitting face to face across a small table. Nor will it look stingy: in a 2025 DatingNews.com and Kinsey Institute survey of 2,000 single US adults, 35.2% said they were choosing coffee or drinks over full meals. You won’t look cheap. You’ll look normal.

If coffee doesn’t fit your week, three backups cover most of what to do on a first date. A farmers’ market works on a weekend morning. A free museum works when it rains. Early drinks at a quiet bar work on a weeknight, if you both drink.

Where to go on a first date: 26 ideas, rated

We rated 26 first date ideas on four things that decide how a first date goes: cost for two, whether you can talk, how long it takes and how easy it is to leave. Quiet, short and cheap ideas score best; movies, concerts and long dinners score worst.

Read each row left to right. The first four ratings tell you what the date will feel like; the last three tell you whether it fits your situation. The full scales are in the box below the table.

Cost for two is before tax and tip, based on national median prices (Toast, August 2026) and, for movie tickets, independent-cinema prices from our First Date Cost Index (September 2026). Talk: Easy = conversation level; Mostly = background noise; Raised voices = busy venue; Not during = show or film. See how we rated these ideas below.

Across all four ratings, five first date activities come out on top: a plain walk, coffee and a walk, a farmers’ market, a free museum and a dessert walk. All five are free or close to it, all five let you talk at a normal volume, and all five can end inside an hour without anyone inventing an excuse. At the bottom sit the movie and the concert. Talk is “not during”, and once the lights go down you can’t leave without making a scene. They aren’t bad dates. They’re bad first dates.

The middle of the table is where most of the fun lives. Mini golf, bowling, skating and a climbing gym trade some conversation for something to do with your hands, which suits people who get tongue-tied sitting still. Trivia night is a team sport on a two-hour clock - better once you already know each other.

The dollar figures are national medians, and big-city prices run higher. For named venues and local prices, see what a first date costs in your city.

How we rated these ideas

These are Smart Dating’s editorial ratings for a typical weeknight or weekend in a mid-size US city, anchored to national median prices and to published noise levels. Your city and your venue will vary.

  • Cost for two, before tax and tip. Free · $ under $20 · $$ $20-50 · $$$ $50-100 · $$$$ over $100. Reference points from Toast for August 2026: a regular hot coffee $3.77, a burger $14.77, and a beer $6.62 according to Toast’s beer price data. An adult evening ticket at an independent cinema cost $12 to $18 in the 12 cities of our First Date Cost Index where one publishes a fixed price. Where no published national median exists - mini golf, bowling, climbing, classes, shows - we give the band only, never a dollar figure.
  • Talk. Easy: conversation-level sound, around the 60 dBA that the NIDCD gives for a typical conversation. Mostly: background noise and the occasional “sorry?” Raised voices: a busy bar or restaurant at peak; restaurants around the country have been measured at averages of 80 dBA or higher. Not during: a show, a film, a concert or an instructor talking.
  • Time. A typical range from hello to goodbye. “Fixed” means a ticket, a screening or a class sets the length for you.
  • Easy out. Easy: a natural end within an hour, each of you close to your own ride. Medium: a natural break after a game, a gallery wing or a meal. Hard: fixed length, ticketed, or far from your ride.
  • Alcohol. None, Optional, or Central to the idea.
  • In/Out. Indoor, outdoor, or both.

Pick by situation, not by vibe

The right first date depends less on your personality than on your situation: how you met, what you can spend, whether you drink and how much time you have after work. Here are seven common situations, the ideas that fit each and why they fit.

You met on an app and have never heard their voice

Say you matched on Tuesday, the messages have been good, and you have no idea what this person sounds like. It’s the most common first date there is. In Pew Research Center’s 2022 survey, three in ten US adults said they had used a dating site or app, and one in ten partnered adults had met their partner that way.

The low-key first date ideas work best here: coffee and a walk, a farmers’ market, a dessert walk. All three score Easy on Talk and Easy on the way out, and all three happen in public. That last part matters: RAINN’s dating safety tips start with meeting in a well-lit, busy area such as a coffee shop, restaurant or park.

If you’re not sure the person matches their photos, a ten-minute video call before you meet settles it. Treat it as a check, not a replacement for the date. Low pressure is the whole point of the first meeting: you’re only finding out whether you want a second one.

You want to keep it under $20

Cheap first date ideas don’t have to look cheap. A walk costs nothing. Two regular coffees cost about $7.54. A farmers’ market costs whatever you decide to taste.

Museums are the underrated option. The Smithsonian’s museums charge no admission at every location except Cooper Hewitt in New York. Bank of America cardholders get free general admission at participating museums across the country during the first full weekend of every month. Many city museums run their own free evenings too, so check the museum’s site before you suggest a day.

You won’t be the only one spending little. In BMO’s 2026 survey, 14% of Americans said their average date costs them nothing, up from 12% a year earlier. Inexpensive is not the same as careless; a thought-through walk says more than an expensive table.

One of you doesn’t drink

Don’t default to a bar. In a 2026 Gallup poll, only 54% of US adults said they drink alcohol, matching the previous year’s record low. Gallup’s data show younger adults drink least: among 18- to 34-year-olds, the share who drink fell from 58% in 2023 to 50% in 2026.

Put differently, close to half of adults don’t drink at all, and the person you matched with may not want to explain their reasons over a first coffee. Sober first date ideas are the easy fix: coffee and a walk, a museum, mini golf, a botanical garden or a climbing gym, where the Alcohol column reads None or Optional.

If a bar is what you both enjoy, pick one with a real zero-proof menu. And when you propose the plan, offer two options, one of them without alcohol. Nobody has to explain anything.

You’re nervous and silence scares you

Silence is worst across a small table with nothing else to look at. First date ideas that aren’t awkward give you a third thing to talk about: a painting, a crate of heirloom tomatoes, a putt that goes badly wrong. For introverts especially, that shared object carries the conversation until it starts carrying itself.

Good picks: a museum or gallery, a farmers’ market, mini golf, or a bookstore browse followed by coffee. Interactive first date ideas like mini golf add a little light competition, which gives nervous talkers something to do besides talk.

Walking helps too, with a caveat. In a 2014 Stanford study by Marily Oppezzo and Daniel Schwartz, creative output rose by an average of 60% when people were walking rather than sitting. That study measured creative thinking, not dates. Our reading is modest: walking side by side takes pressure off, and there is some evidence it loosens up thinking.

If you worry about what to say once you’re there, keep a few first date questions that get past small talk in your pocket.

It’s a weeknight and you both have about 90 minutes

Say you both work until six and have an early start. Casual first date ideas win here: early drinks at a quiet bar before the after-work crowd, coffee somewhere between your two offices, or an early dinner at the bar counter, which is quicker and less formal than a table.

The schedule does you a favor. “I have an early morning” is a real reason to go, not an excuse, so the date ends on its own. If the place tends to get loud, follow the NIDCD’s advice for noisy restaurants: go early, before it gets crowded and busy, and sit off to the side, away from overhead speakers.

The weather won’t cooperate

Check the In/Out column before you commit. On a rainy or freezing day, the indoor ideas that still let you talk are a museum, a bookstore followed by coffee, and a botanical conservatory, which stays green and warm in January. Bowling and a climbing gym work if you’d rather move than talk.

When the weather is good, a picnic in a park is one of the best-value ideas in the table: cheap, Easy on Talk and pleasantly unhurried. It’s only Medium on the way out, because someone has to pack up the blanket.

The simplest fix is a plan with a fallback built in: the farmers’ market if it’s dry, the museum around the corner if it isn’t. Agree on both when you set the date, and nobody has to cancel.

You already know each other a little

A coworker from another team, a friend of a friend, someone from your running club: when you’ve already talked, the conversation needs less protecting. This is the place for fun first date ideas with more energy and less talk - trivia night, a pottery or painting class, a climbing gym, mini golf or bowling.

There’s research behind choosing something new together. In a 2000 study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Arthur Aron and colleagues found that couples who did a seven-minute novel and arousing task together showed greater increases in relationship quality than couples given a more mundane one. The caveat matters: the researchers studied established couples, through a newspaper questionnaire, a door-to-door survey and three lab experiments, not first dates. It’s a reason to try one of the more unique first date ideas, not a guarantee.

The same thinking applies to a blind date set up by friends: you know of each other, but you’ve never met. Treat it like a first meeting from an app - short, public and easy to leave.

What these ideas cost in your city

A good first date can cost under $20 for two, even though the average American date now runs $189 once grooming and gas are counted. What you actually pay depends mostly on the format you choose and the city you live in.

The $189 comes from the BMO Real Financial Progress Index, an Ipsos survey of 2,501 US adults conducted from December 29, 2025, to January 27, 2026. It’s an all-in figure, with pre-date grooming and gas money included, and it rose 12.5% from $168 in 2025. Set it against two coffees at about $7.54 and you have the whole argument of this guide in two numbers.

“Americans spend $189 on an average date, a 12.5% increase from 2025.”— BMO Real Financial Progress Index, 2026

Restaurant meals are where prices move fastest. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the food away from home index rose 3.4% in the 12 months through August 2026. A long dinner is the format most exposed to that increase. A walk isn’t exposed at all.

Plenty of people have already adjusted. In the same DatingNews.com and Kinsey Institute survey, 35.2% of singles said they were choosing coffee or drinks over full meals, and 35% were opting for more affordable restaurants. Trading down is common. It doesn’t signal a lack of interest.

If you came here looking for first date ideas near me, the honest answer is that the ideas travel and the prices don’t. National medians hide how much a cocktail or a museum ticket differs from one metro to the next. For named venues, published prices and collection dates by metro, see our First Date Cost Index for 25 US cities.

If you have to lean in to hear, pick another place

A normal conversation sits around 60 dBA, while US restaurants have been measured at averages of 80 dBA or higher - loud enough that a first conversation turns into repeating yourself. Quiet places give you better information about each other.

Both numbers come from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), part of the National Institutes of Health. At that restaurant level, you’re raising your voice across a small table.

That matters more on a first date than on any other. You’re trying to read someone: their sense of humor, whether they listen, how they talk about their work and their friends. Every “sorry, what?” costs you a little of that.

How to check a place before you suggest it:

  • Stop by at the same time of day a few days earlier, or look through recent photos of the room. A packed bar, hard surfaces everywhere and music you can hear from the door are the usual clues.
  • If you want a number, the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app from the CDC is free, though it’s only available on iOS.
  • Scan recent reviews for “loud” and “couldn’t hear”.

If you’ve already agreed on a restaurant, the NIDCD’s advice still helps. Go early, before it gets crowded, and ask for a table off to the side, away from overhead speakers.

Noise, more than cost or length, is the main reason dinner loses to a walk on a first date. You can’t get to know someone you can’t hear.

Plan the exit and the extension before you go

Choose a first stop that ends naturally within an hour, and know a second place nearby in case it’s going well. You get an easy out and an easy yes.

This solves two opposite worries at once: being stuck for three hours with someone you knew was wrong after ten minutes, and having to say goodbye at the hour mark when it’s going well. The first stop is short by default. The second is close by, optional, and only mentioned if you both want more.

First stop (easy out) If it’s going well Why it works
Coffee Walk to a park or along the water Same neighborhood; the walk is optional
Farmers’ market Brunch nearby The morning ends naturally at noon
Free museum, one wing Café in or near the museum Natural break between rooms
Early drinks at a quiet bar Casual dinner at the bar counter You decide on dinner after an hour, not before
Dessert walk Bookstore or late café Short by default, longer by choice
Mini golf A drink or ice cream nearby The game has a clear end at hole 18

The same structure covers the basics of safety. RAINN’s guidance is plain: meet in a well-lit, busy area and avoid private or isolated locations for your first few dates; take your own car, arrange a rideshare or have a trusted friend drop you off; and let a friend or family member know where you’re going, who you’re meeting and when you expect to be back.

Public confidence in online dating isn’t high. Pew Research Center found that 48% of US adults called it a very or somewhat safe way to meet people, down from 53% in 2019. A public first stop and your own way home are simply common sense, and they make leaving early easy.

Some people skip the stranger-from-an-app part altogether and meet through a matchmaker who has interviewed both sides first. Velin Privé’s introduction protocol is one example: no surname, number or employer is shared until both people agree to meet.

“If you feel uncomfortable at any time, it’s 100% okay to end the date earlier than expected.”— RAINN, Tips for Safer Dating

If it isn’t clicking, you don’t need an elaborate excuse. One sentence does it: “I’ve really enjoyed this - I’m going to head home, but thank you.” Warm, clear, finished.

Save these for the second or third date

Movies, concerts, long dinners, long hikes and dinner at someone’s home aren’t bad dates - they’re bad first dates, because you can’t talk, you can’t leave, or you’re alone with a stranger.

  • A movie. Two tickets at an independent cinema come to $24 to $36 in the cities of our cost index, for two hours in which neither of you can say a word.
  • A concert or comedy show. Talk is “not during”, and a ticket makes leaving at the break feel like a statement.
  • A tasting-menu dinner. Two to three hours at a table, often in a loud room, with the next course arriving whether it’s going well or not.
  • A long or remote hike. Hard to end early, and RAINN advises avoiding private or isolated locations for your first few dates.
  • Cooking at home, yours or theirs. Private by definition. Lovely on date four.
  • A group outing with friends. You learn how they are with your friends, not how the two of you talk.

All of these get better once you know you like each other. For a sense of when that usually happens, see how many dates it usually takes before it’s a relationship.

Propose two options and an end time

Offer two specific options with a day, a time and a rough length. It’s easier to say yes to, and it quietly sets the exit.

Two options give the other person a real choice without handing them the whole job of planning. Make one of them alcohol-free, so nobody has to explain whether they drink. A rough length, “about an hour”, tells them you’re not proposing an entire evening and gives you both a graceful place to stop.

A message that does all of this might read:

“Want to grab coffee Thursday at 6 near your office, or check out the Saturday farmers’ market around 10? Either way, about an hour.”

If they suggest dinner instead, you don’t have to push back. Say yes, pick an early time and a place you know is quiet, and ask for the bar counter or a corner table rather than the middle of the room.

The one-card checklist

Before you send the plan, check it against seven things.

  • Costs less for two than either of you would mind covering
  • Quiet enough to talk without leaning in
  • Fits in about an hour, with a natural end
  • Public and busy; you each arrive on your own
  • Works without alcohol
  • Has an indoor fallback if the weather turns
  • Has a second stop nearby if it’s going well

There is no ideal first date, only a good first hour: somewhere cheap, quiet and easy to leave. Get that right, and the conversation has room to happen. Once the place is set, the next question is what to talk about on a first date.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good cheap first date?

Coffee and a walk, a farmers’ market, a free museum or a dessert walk all come in under $20 for two. Two regular coffees cost about $7.54 at August 2026 national median prices, before tax and tip. Smithsonian museums charge no admission except Cooper Hewitt in New York, and Bank of America cardholders get free general admission at participating museums on the first full weekend of each month.

What’s a good simple first date?

One stop, about an hour, somewhere you can hear each other. Coffee followed by a short walk is the simplest version: it’s public, it’s cheap and it ends naturally. Know a second place nearby, such as a park or a brunch spot, and suggest it only if the first hour is going well.

What are first date ideas that aren’t dinner and drinks?

A museum or gallery, a farmers’ market, mini golf, a bookstore followed by coffee, or a climbing gym. Each gives you something to look at or do, costs less than a restaurant dinner and works whether or not either of you drinks, which matters when only 54% of US adults said they drink alcohol in Gallup’s 2026 poll.

Can you kiss on the first date?

Yes, if you both want to. There’s no rule about timing; what matters is mutual interest and clear consent. If you can’t tell, ask - a simple question is far less awkward than guessing wrong. A first date that ends with a warm goodbye and no kiss is still a good first date.

What is the 3-3-3 rule for dating?

It’s an informal dating guideline, not a research finding, and versions differ. The most common one sets three checkpoints - after three dates, three weeks and three months - for taking stock of where things stand. We compare it with other popular rules in our guide to dating rules.
